How to Make Authentic Lebanese Coffee at Home
There's something timeless about the aroma of freshly brewed Lebanese coffee. Whether it's shared with family after lunch, served to welcome guests, or enjoyed during a quiet morning, Lebanese coffee is more than just a drink—it's a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
At Café Younes, we've been roasting coffee since 1935, and we believe that every great cup starts with quality beans, the right grind, and a little patience.
In this guide, we'll show you how to prepare authentic Lebanese coffee at home, just like generations have enjoyed it.
What Is Lebanese Coffee?
Lebanese coffee is traditionally brewed in a Rakweh (also known as a cezve or Turkish coffee pot). Unlike filter coffee or espresso, the coffee is brewed directly with water, creating a rich, full-bodied drink with a distinctive layer of foam and fine coffee grounds settling at the bottom of the cup.
The secret lies in:
- Ultra-fine coffee grind
- Freshly roasted beans
- Slow brewing
- No paper filters
What You'll Need
To prepare one traditional cup of Lebanese coffee, you'll need:
- 1 cup of cold water (approximately 60–70 ml)
- 1 heaping teaspoon of finely ground Lebanese coffee
- Sugar (optional, according to your preference)
- A Rakweh (traditional coffee pot)
For the best flavor, use freshly roasted Café Younes Lebanese Coffee, specially ground for traditional brewing.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 – Add Water
Pour one cup of cold water into your Rakweh
Starting with cold water helps extract the coffee's natural oils more evenly.
Step 2 – Add Coffee
Add one heaping teaspoon of finely ground coffee directly into the water.
If you prefer sweet coffee, add sugar now before heating.
Do not stir once the coffee begins to heat.
Step 3 – Stir Before Heating
Gently stir the coffee and sugar together while the water is still cold.
Once mixed, place the Rakweh over low to medium heat.
Step 4 – Let the Foam Develop
As the coffee heats, a rich layer of foam will begin forming on top.
This foam is one of the hallmarks of authentic Lebanese coffee.
Avoid letting the coffee boil over.
Step 5 – Remove Before Boiling
Just before the coffee reaches a full boil, remove it from the heat.
Some coffee lovers repeat this process two or three times to create an even richer flavor and thicker foam.
Step 6 – Pour Slowly
Carefully pour the coffee into small cups.
Allow the coffee to rest for about one minute before drinking so the grounds settle at the bottom.
Tips for the Perfect Cup
✔ Always use freshly roasted coffee.
✔ Store coffee in an airtight container away from heat and light.
✔ Use filtered water whenever possible.
✔ Brew over low heat to develop a smoother flavor.
✔ Never stir the coffee after it begins heating.
Choosing the Right Coffee
Not all coffee is created equal.
The freshness of the roast, bean quality, and grind consistency all affect the final cup.
At Café Younes, our coffees are roasted regularly in small batches to preserve their aroma and flavor, ensuring every cup delivers the rich experience our customers have trusted since 1935.
